Original Lake City Ordnance Plant carton of Caliber .30 T-44 Ball, Frangible, the World War II training round developed for the Army Air Forces’ Operation Pinball program. Bomber gunners fired these bakelite-and-powdered-lead projectiles at armored Bell P-63 Kingcobra aircraft fitted with hit sensors; the bullets were meant to break up on impact so live pilots could serve as targets. Produced at Lake City in late 1944 into 1945 under the T-44 designation, the load was standardized as the Cartridge, Ball, Frangible, Caliber .30, M22 in early 1945, with production ending that fall.
